Wearable Technologies: Applications, Human Factors and Privacy

By combining diverse sensors and actuators, wearable technologies are versatile, accommodating requirements from multiple applications. Wearables are able to support, enhance and replace human activities in domains that range from healthcare to entertainment. A large number of devices and form factors are commercially available today, and research and development expect a continuous growth. Due to the close contact with the human body and their continuous usage, wearable devices must have high wearability, being comfortable to wear and ease to use. Their development process should systematically consider the users' needs, requirements and wishes, as well as the contextual changes occurring when users interact on the go. In this talk, I present an overview of wearable technologies, form factors, features and applications. Then, I describe key considerations of human factors and wearability, including requirements and quality factors for the design of wearable technologies. Finally, I conclude with a discussion about privacy concerns for wearables and present future trends in wearable computing.

Speaker's Biography

Vivian Genaro Motti is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Sciences and Technology at George Mason University where she leads the Human-Centered Design Lab (HCD Lab). Dr. Motti holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium, and a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of S?o Paulo, in Brazil. Her main research interests are Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing, in especial mobile and wearable application for healthcare. In her research she focuses on users' needs, requirements and wishes to bring technology closer to users' lives. For further information about her research, please refer to the website:
