Graduation Procedures
To graduate, you must first submit an Application
for Degree card by the Graduate School's deadline
for that semester. You must also complete all
defense requirements by the Graduate School's
deadlines. For PhD and MS thesis students,
this means holding the final defense and submitting
the final thesis documents by the appropriate
deadline. All MS Theses and PhD Dissertations must
be submitted to the Electronic Theses and
Dissertations system (see the ETD Homepage). For the
MS Coursework-only
option, you should submit a
report from a CS 5974 Independent Study course to
the Program Director to satisfy the final exam
requirement by the deadline, or have your advisor
send an email message to the Program Director
advising whether to accept or reject the report. MS
Coursework-only
reports are not submitted to ETD.
A student must satisfy the degree requirement
before applying for graduation in a given semester.
In addition, a degree-seeking student must already
have a POS approved by the department and the
Graduate School. In the semester during which a
degree-seeking student is to graduate, the student
must submit a Final Exam Request Form to the
department and the Graduate School specifying the
thesis committee (as in the approved POS), thesis
title (for thesis students) and exam date and time.
The Final Exam Request Form must be submitted two
weeks prior to the exam date. For MS-coursework
option students, the Final Exam Requirement is
satisfied by passing CS 5974 Independent Study (3
credit hours). For MS-thesis and PhD students, it
is satisfied by a successful oral defense of
the thesis research and CS 5994 (for MS) or CS
7994 (for PhD) research hours.
